OCCASIONAL BULLETIN #130 – FEBRUARY 6, 2018

Dear VOCS Members:

Goodness, how did it get to be 1/12th of the way into 2018? I expect the rains have washed much of the memory of this damp month away. This OB is quite short. It reports on the starting up of a VOCS board with some new and many old faces and its first resolution, relating to a Mediterranean Feast. It also calls for interest from NSMs (vide infra), in jolly NSM meetings north of the Lions Gate Bridge and provides a list of the dates we know so far for VOCS events in 2018.

We have a small committee looking into upping our communications capacity and website, signing up new members, getting “the word” out, etc. We wonder, out loud, whether any of our membership of a tech turn of mind would be at all interested in assisting us in that project. If that be you, please be in touch with our President, Alan Lund, at moc.l1532318681iamg@1532318681nala.1532318681dnul1532318681.

FIRST VOCS BOARD MEETING OF 2018

The first 2018 meeting of the VOCS board was held at the Wicklow Pub on January 16th. The meeting welcomed some new faces, including Andrew Parkin, Simon Taylor, Heidi Tworek and Kevin Oversby, and while much jolly effort went into “bread and beer,” it proved to be a productive meeting, with thoughts about developing an ongoing strategy for VOCS’s success. There was also approval of the first Feast of 2018, organized by Peter Moskos, of which more below.

MEDITERRANEAN FEAST AT NUBA, 3116 WEST BROADWAY IN VANCOUVER AT 6:45 FOR 7:00 PM ON THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 2018

By the beginning of March, we at VOCS are counting on some material number of members and guests being ready for the scents and flavours of the Levant.

The Feast will be held in the Taverna on the second floor of the Kits Nuba, which seats 30 comfortably. Food will be served “family style,” with sharing dishes brought to the table, including both hot and cold dishes, most of which will be vegetarian — good news for anyone still living by the obvious New Year’s resolution — but with a carnivore option as well!

The cost per person will be $30 plus a tip of 18% and taxes. Wine, coffee, and dessert are extra. We are getting a 10% group discount. Wine will be available by the bottle or you can bring your own, but there is a corkage charge of $18 per bottle.

Our Feasts are a great opportunity for new members to meet other members for the first time, so if you are a recent arrival, do please consider joining us at the Feast.

The menu will be:

First Course:               Second Course:                      Third Course:

Hummus                      Najib’s Special Cauliflower     Chicken Kebab

Taboullah                    Mjada Lentils                          Lamb Kafta

Please contact Peter Moskos at moc.l1532318681iamg@1532318681sokso1532318681mp1532318681 by February 25th if you are coming.

ANYONE INTERESTED IN NORTH SHORE MEMBERS (THE “NSMs”) MEETING FOR A COFFEE OR A DRINK AT SOME PLACE ON THE HILLY PARTS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LIONS GATE BRIDGE?

Michael de Brooy has suggested that it might be fun to get the NSMs together once in a while for some happy socializing over, over… well, over whatever NSMs like to do on the North Shore – coffee, tea, lunch, brunch, din-dins? If you are interested in making that happen, please contact Michael at moc.l1532318681iamg@1532318681ehtla1532318681wcim1532318681. We at VOCS leave the rest to the NSMs.

OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS – AS FAR AS WE AT VOCS ARE AWARE TO DATE!

The 88th annual Boat Race Dinner will be held at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on Saturday, May 5th, 2018 starting at 6:30 PM. Ours is the oldest boat race dinner in North America and the cornerstone of what has kept VOCS operating through the Great Depression, World War II, and more changes in Vancouver than anyone who paid their $1.50 to be present at the first one on March 23rd, 1929 could possibly imagine. The Toast to the Universities will be given this year by Nicole Davison, the United Kingdom Consul General for British Columbia, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest Territories. Nicole has been with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (the “FCO”) since 1988 and has served the FCO in South Africa, Bangladesh, Ukraine, China, and Croatia as well as, when at home in the UK, serving it in the West European, Latin American and Caribbean Departments. MARK YOUR DIARIES; MORE INFO IN LATER OBs.

P.S. We are still working on a Boat Race Breakfast for the morning of March 24th, 2018 but no hard arrangements have been made. Lot of telephone tag with pubs!

  1. The 7th annual Bardnic, consisting of a potluck dinner and watching a Bard on the Beach play, will be held on Saturday, July 14th, 2017 starting at 6:30 P.M. This year, it will be As You Like It set to the music of the Beatles. It is expected to be one of this year’s Bard sell-outs. As it will be the 229th anniversary of the infamous attack on the Bastille and a Beatles-excited event, the Potluck may follow a Bastille-and-Beatles theme!
  2. The somewhat annual Varsity Match(es) Breakfast will be held in a pub to be announced (currently aiming for Library Square) on December 7th, 2018. Usual early start at 8:30 AM, usual lashings of coffee, usual English breakfast, usual large people bashing into each other on the big screen, propelling a squashed oval ball. Do please start now to think about how many rugger fans you know who might like to join in. We are going to recruit extra fans from the local rugger clubs. MARK YOUR DIARIES, MORE WARNINGS TO FOLLOW IN LATER OBs.

(well done light blue …)

And that, best beloved VOCSians, is all there is for now. Only seventy more OBs to OB #200!

Best wishes from we at VOCS.
