OCCASIONAL BULLETIN #128 – NOVEMBER 28TH, 2017

Dear VOCS Members:

We at VOCS apologize for the long hiatus between OBs. No good excuse really other than that life seemed to intervene in the OB’ing process. As, for instance, the fact that we at VOCS are writing this near Fredericton, New Brunswick, where I am helping to look after two grandbabies as their parents carry on their careers of training to deal with the Queen’s Enemies, should they materialize.

The result will be quite a short OB with a lack of most of the usual jolly illustrations, as I am working on an unfamiliar laptop and am not sure how to move pictures from Mrs. Google’s library to an OB on this machine. Next time should be all singing, all dancing again.

VOCS ITALIAN FEAST HELD ON OCTOBER 3RD AT PRONTO RESTAURANT ON CAMBIE

Our Master of the Feasts pulled off another great success with the Italian Feast at Pronto on Cambie in October, with a full house in the Pronto heated backyard annex and a goodly number of our most recently joined VOCS members. The food was an outstanding mix of pastas and salads, and there was much good chat over food and wine.

Watch this space. There should be another Feast sorted out for some time in the dark early months of 2018!

BAD NEWS – THE 3RD ANNUAL VARSITY MATCH BREAKFAST, WHICH WAS TO BE HELD AT THE MANCHESTER PUB AT 1941 WEST BROADWAY IN VANCOUVER AT 8:00AM ON DECEMBER 7TH, 2017 HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

Due to other serious commitments, the volunteer who usually organizes the Varsity Match Breakfast could not do the organizing this year, with the unfortunate result that we have had to cancel the event. This means that unless you buy in a pile of good breakfast yum yums and get a TV lead to the Match and invite serious rugger fans to share your provender while glued to the screen, you will miss out on scenes such as the above or the breakfast as below.

Our unreserved apologies.

BARDNIC 2018

While no other details for Bardnic 2018 are available, the play has been chosen. It will be As You Like It, into which will be intertwined, by the magic of Bard on the Beach, the music of the Beatles. It is expected that the play will be a sell-out, so VOCS’s line-in on tickets may prove very useful to those who sign up early when we have details of our Bardnic date.

As to that, watch this space.

We at VOCS are sure that knowing the play for Bardnic ’18 will help members in planning what other Bard tickets they will buy for the 2018 season, the other plays being Macbeth, Titus Andronicus and Lysistrata.

VOCS NEEDS YOU!

Like any other volunteer organization, VOCS runs on the work of volunteers. We have a volunteer board, and each event takes up some time each year of one or several volunteers. None of it is onerous and most of it is really rather fun (unless it is finding someone to toast the Universities at the BRD every year).

VOCS has a band of volunteers who have loyally served in producing events for several years now, but as with any group, there is attrition from all sorts of life exigencies, including just plain getting warn out with being a VOCS volunteer after quite a few years on the job.

If you would like to join with those of us who make VOCS work as the happy social organization it is, please send an email to our President, Alan Lund at *protected email*. If you do that, Alan will fix up a lunch with himself and probably at least one other of the VOCS volunteers in order to discuss what you might do at VOCS.

Autumnal cheers from us at VOCS……of course in New Brunswick at –10°C today, we at VOCS like to think only of the sunny times so lately left behind….
