OCCASIONAL BULLETIN #119 –FEBRUARY 14, 2017

Dear VOCS Members:

This is a most important Valentine’s Day OB!
1

It clarifies the muddle of dates resulting from writing the last of these bulletins whilst on Hornby Island. While not partaking of magic mushrooms or anything like that, the company of Hobbits and assorted Little People, including the infamous Horn Bees, does make exact times and dates seem a little too much like the office used to be!

It will also allow you to mark your diaries for most of the events that your board of directors hammered out at our meeting on February 9th.

FIRST ANNUAL VARSITY MATCH BREAKFAST – DECEMBER 8th, 2016

We at VOCS were most remiss in the Xmas and last OB to have omitted reporting on the first annual Varsity Match Breakfast, held bright and early on December 8th, 2016 at the Manchester Pub.  It was actually the Varsity Matches Breakfast, as both the Ladies’ and the Gentlemen’s matches were shown on the big screen over a wonderful full English breakfast. Lacking Clonakilty black-and-white puddings, not quite as good as a full Irish—well, Cork—breakfast, but not too bad nonetheless.

2

Those are the Irish puddings, so they are.

Due to short notice and some other unfortunate issues, including it being a working day and others now lost with my notes, our audience was only six, but six very hearty members. However, we envision a much better turnout next year, with better notice and also an invitation to the local rugby clubs to join in the fun.

As those of you who follow Varsity rugby will already know, the Oxford ladies won their match with a score of 3-0 and the Cambridge gentlemen won theirs with a score of 18-23. Both were really exciting matches, and for the hundreds of you not at the Manchester on the 8th of December last, you can watch the video of the matches at http://www.thevarsitymatch.com/.

Not really cheating to do so; it was a Thursday morning.

ERRATA – DATES OF THE 87TH ANNUAL BOAT RACE DINNER AND THE CONCERT BY THE CHOIR OF KING’S COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE

We at VOCS are in debt to four of our sharp-eyed readers, including Prof. John Conway—who delivered History 100 lectures to we at VOCS in our near infancy in 1965. They all picked up the great confusions relating to the dating of the 87th BRD and the KCC concert.
