Dear VOCS Members:
This OB will be one of the shortest, as it deals only with two event reminders. One is for this year’s Boat Race Dinner, and the other is for the concert by the Choir of King’s College Cambridge at the Chan Centre.
To write more would cut into my valuable aimless walking and painting time up here on Hornby Island!
THE 87TH BOAT RACE(S) DINNER – FRIDAY, MAY 19TH, 2017 – ROYAL VANCOUVER YACHT CLUB, JERICHO BEACH
As most of you know, first held on March 23rd, 1929, our BRD is the oldest in North America. Exactly why that is remains shrouded in the mists of history, but it does suggest that no current VOCS member, nor our members’ guests, should miss going to such an historic and fun event! For those who do not know the RVYC dining room, it has a stunning view of the harbour and the North Shore mountains – a thoroughly appropriate backdrop for something as solidly Vancouver as the dear old VOCS BRD!
As at the 86th BRD, there will be an opportunity to watch videos of both the Ladies’ and the Gentlemen’s Boat Races on the Tideway. As established last year – the first year that both races were on the Tideway – VOCS will continue to refer to the Universities’ rowing activities on the Tideway on Boat Race Day as the “Boat Race”.
Sadly, there has been some inflation in ticket pricing since the $3.50 paid for BRD #1, although that did not cover the total costs to VOCS of slightly under $9.00. The VOCS board is meeting on February 9th. At that time, we will sort out the lowest price per ticket we can without running VOCS into a loss. We will also be settling the menu and looking into a better payment alternative to Eventbrite, if such there be. The ticket price, menu, and payment system for the 87th BRD will appear in OB #118.
The key details of the 87th BRD are:
Date: Friday, March 19th, 2017
Time: 6:30 P.M. to 11:30ish P.M.
Place: Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, 3811 Point Grey Road, Vancouver
Ticket Price: TBA
Toast to O/C: Rudy Buttignol, Chief Executive Officer, the Knowledge Network Corporation
(Boat Race #7 – 1841)
Do please save the date and read OB #118 carefully.
CONCERT OF THE CHOIR OF KING’S COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE – SUNDAY, MAY 26th, 2017 – CHAN CENTRE
We at VOCS know from numerous conversations that there is some excitement among our members about the forthcoming concert presented by the choir of King’s College Cambridge in March. Fearing that such enthusiasm has not yet led you to buy a ticket to the concert, and knowing, from inside information, that the tickets are coming close to selling out, I do urge you to follow the directions at
and buy your tickets soon so as not to be disappointed.
We at VOCS still remember with crystal clarity sitting in a pew of King’s College Chapel in the hours between our Part II Law Tripos Company and Equity final exams, listening to some gifted organist playing Bach’s Toccata and Fugue. So much more uplifting and memorable than one more run through our Equity notes! Then there were three of us polishing off a modestly sized bottle of whiskey in the freezing lineup to get into the Christmas Carol Service – must have been in 1970. But best of all was losing all concern about anything while looking above the icy, candle-lit gloom at the ceiling tracery of the Chapel and listening to Evensong so many cold Winter Sundays.
They really are the best. What more can we say?
We at VOCS, in retirement….
