Vancouver Oxford and Cambridge Society (“VOCS”) Occasional Bulletin #117, December 25, 2016
Best Wishes for a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year in 2017! from VOCS
2016 was a very happy year and brought some very positive changes for VOCS. It is time for us to thank those who made it all possible.
Thanks to Mark Vessey for providing Green College as a home for board meetings. Thanks to Dania Sheldon for minutes of board meetings and to all the members of the board who have faithfully attended its meetings and given VOCS so much wise guidance.
This now includes those directors who have joined from “Oxbridge Drinks”, our new group dedicated to young new Oxbridge arrivals, which has brought the old guard on the board slightly more up to date. Huge thanks to the tireless Stuart Bowyer for being the Keeper of the List of Members, who has enabled us to send out to you fifteen OBs (the same as 2015!). VOCS would not function at all as well without their generous expenditure of time and effort.
Thanks, too, to Simon Dorey for keeping our books and finding us solvent again this year, as well as for organizing the Warren–Dunn Croquet Match, and to all those who supplied refreshments for the Match. Big thanks, also, to Peter Moskos, the Master of the Feasts. Huge thanks to Rachel Dekker, Meghan Hardman, Jeremy Pennington, and Trevor Bruce for finding time from very busy careers to organize monthly Oxbridge Drinks events, with a resulting very healthy jump in VOCS membership and a growth in friendly relations with alums of some of the better schools from the lately rebellious American colonies!
Thanks as well to the Honourable Andrew Wilkinson for his amusing and thoughtful Toast to the Universities. The 2017 BRD “toaster” to the Universities will be Rudy Butignol, CEO of Knowledge Network Corporation, an experienced speaker deeply immersed for years in spreading knowledge in BC.
Also thanks for their amusing toasts at the BRD to Trevor Bruce, who delivered a truly memorable Toast to Oxford, and to Rachel Dekker for her very charming toast to Cambridge. Also thanks to almost-then Past President, “we at VOCS”, for saying Grace at the BRD and, of course, thanks to our long-time VOCS Honorary Secretary and Everything Else, Dr. Robert Dunn, for once again giving the loyal toast to H.M. the Queen of Canada for the 85th BRD.
Wow, the list is long. Huge thanks to Alan Lund, both for taking on the Presidency of VOCS and, with his wife Louise and the all the other food (and drink), providers, for organizing a wonderful Kidnic Garden Party, sadly the last public event after many decades at the old UK consulate residence. Of course, in that connection, huge thanks to Rupert and Juliette Potter, the UK consul and consul consort, who so warmly and generously allowed Kidnic into their home two years running. We will miss them and the old Residence. We are now on a hunt for a nice, big kid-friendly garden for 2017!
Thanks to the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and its staff, which made the BRD another stunning success. Thanks, too, to Bard on the Beach and Scott Bellis, one of Bard’s most experienced actors, who welcomed us so warmly into the VIP tent for the seventh annual Bardnic. In that connection, thanks also to Margie Knox for doing all the internal wiring to make the Bardnic work so well, and all the jolly attendees who, guided by the God of Potluckery, got us all fed to our respective capacities.
Also, thanks to all the members of the board, Alan Lund, Mark Vessey, Dania Sheldon, Simon Dorey, Christina Sampogna, Peter Moskos, Meghan Hardman, Nick Arden, Rachel Dekker, Trevor Bruce, and Jeremy Pennington for sharing the duties that make VOCS work. Deep appreciation, too, to Alan Lund for taking over the helm of VOCS after the comparatively short seven-year term of “we at VOCS” and commencing the job of renewal needed to bring VOCS up-to-date with modern communications and ever-changing times.
Finally, thanks to all the members and their family and friends who came out to functions or just said OBs are appreciated, and all those good, forgiving souls here forgotten.
And a footnote for those who actually read OBs with their morning kipper and toast, “we at VOCS” will continue to turn them out. Collecting them in one place for posterity is a task planned but as of yet a bit slow off the ground. If any of you have any of OB#1-30, please send them to *protected email* for the collection.
And, in the New Year…More events, and all of us at VOCS hope to see you again or for the first time in 2017.
Warmest Best Wishes for Happiness, Good Health, and Prosperity Today and All MMXVII!
