THE 7TH ANNUAL WARREN–DUNN CUP CROQUET MATCH @ THE VANCOUVER CROQUET CLUB | Vancouver | British Columbia | Canada

THE 7TH ANNUAL WARREN–DUNN CUP CROQUET MATCH, TO BE HELD ON AUGUST 27TH, 2017 FROM 12:30–6:00PM AT THE VANCOUVER CROQUET CLUB, 4376 WEST 6TH AVENUE IN VANCOUVER

Croquet (a very olde game) has survived since at least the Conquest, as it is one of the only games that you can play happily with a minimum of knowledge or skill and without ever having played it before. This ought to appeal to those amongst us who are not particularly sporty and who do not particularly care whether they win or lose, as long as they, or someone out on the lawn, plays the game. We at VOCS happily count ourselves amongst that drone-like crew. Vide infra.

On the other hand, there are those who come to the field with finely balanced, hand-tailored mallets personalized with their names picked out in gilt, with worker-bee-like, white-hot fires of competition burning, hours of practice behind high hedges on secret lawns to their credit, and very keen to achieve dark- or light-blue honours with receipt of the Warren–Dunn Cup. Vide infra.

Fortunately, both drones and worker bees can share knocking the coloured balls through the hoops on the same green sward, as well as intervals with Pimm’s, cucumber sandwiches, scones, cream and fruit, tea and biscuits. Also, drones can happily just come to watch and partake in the goodies while meeting old friends and new.

We at VOCS would be delighted to hear from anyone who can help with handling the making and serving of tea and even bringing some goodies. Some of our regular standby providers of goodies are will be on vacation or otherwise engaged on the day and it would be greatly appreciated by VOCS and fellow VOCSians if one or more of you that are handy at tea goodies would step forward to fill the breach. Full instructions on how to construct cucumber sandwiches will be available to brave volunteers wanting to help and keen to learn how to create those little items of ambrosia.

If you can help with Match preparations or plan on coming to the Match just to play or observe and chat, please send an email to Jeremy Marr at *protected email*. The cost per player is $30 and for non-playing sojourners is $10. Please pay at the Match.
